**504 Information...
1. What is a 504 Plan?
A 504 plan is designed to provide accommodations or assistance to a student who qualifies as a person with a disability under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Such a plan is developed by a team of people knowledgeable about the student and his or her learning needs, including the student, the student’s parents, and educational professionals. It specifies what accommodations and/or services they will get in school to "level the playing field" so that they may derive as much benefit from their public educational program as their non-disabled peers.
2. What determines eligibility?
Students eligible as a qualified student with a disability under Section 504 are those students who do not require specially designed instruction. Reasonable accommodations can be physical and instructional (e.g. sitting near the teacher, or having directions re-read)
3. Does my child have a qualifying disability for a 504 Plan?
Although not all students who are identified as having a disability will qualify for a 504, the types of documented conditions that may be covered include:
- ADD/ADHD
- Allergic reactions/asthma
- Cancer
- Communicable diseases (e.g., hepatitis, HIV, tuberculosis)
- Depression
- Drug/alcohol addiction (if, no longer using)
- Dyslexia
- Eating disorders
- Emotional/behavioral disorders (e.g. conduct disorders)
- Heart disease
- Hemophilia
- Post traumatic stress disorder
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Social maladjustment
- Suicidal tendencies
- Temporary conditions due to illness or accident
**If you believe your child may benefit from a 504 Plan, please call the Guidance Department at 422-1620 Ext. 510 or 525. 504 Plans are reviewed each year to maintain continued success of the student
