CLOSING OF SCHOOL

In case of bad weather or emergency, the MSD will announce via Alert Now (automated phone service), over the radio and television stations school closings, early dismissals, and delayed openings:

Milford WYUS (AM) 93
Dover WDOV (AM) 1410
Milford WAFL (FM) 97.7
Dover WDSD (FM) 94.7
Milford WXPZ (FM) 101.3
Millsboro WGMD (FM) 92
Georgetown WZBH (FM) 93.5
Salisbury WBOC TV CHANNEL 16
Salisbury WMDT TV CHANNEL 47

Weather conditions and the subsequent safety considerations of getting students to school safely may at times require a one or two hour delayed opening. These delayed openings are announced on our local radio stations usually by 7:00 AM (stations listed in the closing of school section). On days with a one-hour delay, school will start at 9:40 AM. A two-hour delay will move the start of school to 10:40 AM. Breakfast will not be served when there is a two-hour delay.

Early Closing for Milford Middle School is 12:25 and buses will depart at 12:30, unless notified otherwise.

EARLY DISMISSALS

Students who are expecting an early dismissal must bring a note to their first period teacher. The first period teacher will issue an early dismissal pass. It is the student’s responsibility to note the time of dismissal and notify his or her teacher during that period by showing the teacher the dismissal pass. In an effort to minimize classroom disruptions, the office will not call classrooms to notify teachers and students of early dismissals, except in the case of a verifiable emergency. Parents must meet their children in the office and sign them out. In some cases, parent identification may be requested. Parents are reminded not to park in the bus loading zone during the time that the lights are flashing. When weather is such that students' safety is in jeopardy, school will be dismissed early. In such occurrences, radio stations will announce the early dismissal time.

FIELD TRIPS

Parental permission is required for all field trips regardless of length or duration. Students on Principal's Probation are excluded from field trips unless granted special permission by the principal. Reckless or disruptive behavior on field trips will not be tolerated and will result in the loss of future field trips and special activities. Parents must be sure that students are eligible to attend field trips prior to payment being made. Once payment is made, refunds are not given without approval from the principal. Even though your child may not be able to attend, expenses are still incurred. For example, some attractions and bus contractors are paid in advance of actual trips.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS

When a student enters the district for the first time, the parent has two weeks to present his/her shot records. The school nurse will review the records to insure your child meets the minimum state standards for school entrance. There is a current state regulation which requires all students entering 7th grade to have completed the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations. The nurse needs the written proof of these vaccinations for the student health records. The family doctor can provide this documentation. If a student does not meet the state requirements, he/she may be excluded from attending until he/she has received the missing immunizations. The nurse can provide any information a parent may need to meet the requirement. If the family is new to the area, the nurse can recommend a health care provider.

VISITORS

All visitors are welcome to our school. Visitors are asked to report to the office first to sign in and to get a visitor’s pass. Visitors may not roam our hallways unless provided approval from the front office and given a visitor’s pass or accompanied by a school employee.
