Health Care

The school nurse can give medications to your child during school hours.  District policy states that a student cannot carry medications while he/she is in school.  ALL medications should be brought to the nurse upon arrival in the building.  Please note the following guidelines for sending medications to school:

If medication is a prescription drug:  (1) the medication must be in the ORIGINAL container with the pharmacy label in place;  (2) the dosage on the bottle must be the same as the student is currently receiving (a change in dosage from the one on the bottle MUST come from the physician as a written order) ; (3) there must be a signed note from the parent requesting the nurse to give the medication at the correct time

If medication is an over-the-counter drug:  the medication must be in the ORIGINAL container and there must be a signed note from the parent stating why the student is receiving the medication and what amount is to be given at what time during the school day.

**Please note that all asthma medications are to be kept in the nurse's office.  If a doctor wants a student to keep his/her "rescue" inhaler with him/her at all times, the nurse will need a written order from the doctor and a permission form from the parent.

Becoming ill during the day:
students who become ill during the school day can see the nurse with a pass from his/her teacher.  The nurse will call a parent if she feels the student is unable to continue attending classes.  Please let the nurse know if your child has a special health need you would like her to monitor.

Returning to school:

It is required that students be free of fever for 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medicines before they return to school. Vomiting and diarrhea need to have stopped 24 hours before returning to school. Antibiotics for contagious diseases like pink eye, or strep throat need to be taken for 24 hours before your child comes back to school. If your child has a contagious condition or illness, please notify us so that other children can be monitored for similar symptoms.

Immunization Records

When a student enters the district for the first time, the parent has two weeks to present his/her shot records.  The school nurse will review the records to insure your child meets the minimum state standards for school entrance.  There is current state regulation which requires all students entering 7th grade to have completed the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations.  the nurse needs written proof of these vaccinations for the student health records.  the family doctor can provide this documentation.  If a student does not meet the state requirements, he/she may be excluded from attending until he/she has received the missing immunizations.  The nurse can provide any information a parent may need to meet the requirement.  If the family is new to the area, the nurse can recommend a health care provider.
